Why the Repository Is the Source of Truth

· 1 min read · 0 views

When AI agents help build a large system, conversation history cannot be the project’s memory.

Sessions end. Context gets compacted. Agents change. A decision made in one conversation can disappear from the next.

So TimeSense stores important knowledge in the repository:

• Product rules
• Architecture decisions
• Phase status
• Implementation history
• Known issues
• Open questions
• Exact next steps

Before coding, an agent reads that project memory. After meaningful work, it updates the same files.

The repository—not the chat—is the source of truth.

The tradeoff is discipline. Documentation has to be maintained as part of implementation, not treated as optional cleanup.

The benefit is recoverability. A new session can understand what exists, what failed, what must not be reconsidered and what should happen next.

Agentic development becomes much safer when memory is designed as part of the system.

Why the repository is the source of truth: an ephemeral AI chat session compared with a repository that records decisions, status, history, and known issues. The repository holds project memory; rejected: relying on AI conversation history.
